it is not waste

india have strategic n economic benefits in afganistan

its location will always be important for india and pakistan

first afganistan is mineraly rich which are not exploited so far due to militancy n taliban rule

recently SAIL n seven other indian companies won the contract for mining three iron core blocks

Also indian companies are looking for gold mining , india is also planing for constructing a rail link between afgan mineral rich barmiyan province n iran chabar port

it enhance trade opportunity for us

second n most important is traditionally all the POK based militants have strong link n training in afganistan based terrorist

(kandhar hijacking case of indian airlines in 1999) so to contain them n nab them we need good relation with afganistan

also to run any covert opeartion inside pakistan we can use afganistan (thatswhy PAKISTAN ISI trying hard to stop india involving in developmental work in afganaistan by atcks on indian embassy )

3 to check Narcotics trafficking (afgnistan was made a hub of narcotics by earlier taliban regime ) which are smuggled into india through pakistan so to prevent it

we can sell them our lca(light combat aircraft) n lch(light combat helicopter) platform INSAS (indian national small arms systems) p n other military equipment n earn money

4 to check chinese influence over afganistan

mean good good for india

thats why we r doing developmental work in afganistan it create positive image of india in world n also in afgan people(recent survey by an international think tank specify that afgan people trust india more then pakistan)

Peace and prosperity in neighborhood is a prerequisite for development at home.. Each Rupee spent by Indian govt. in Afghanistan , would  function like a MIRV ballistic missile , hitting multiple target with a single source just as  my friend explains above. So it has long term benefits and is never a wastage.
