    Default guidence for General studies

    hai,

I am in need of help and guidence for the preparation of General Studies for both Prelims and Mains 2008. I would like to know about the two different types of approach to be adopted in preparing for the exams. I am also confused with "Where to start with exactly.........?" Kindly guide me to continue in the right direction.

i think you are a bit nervous and confused.
take a bareak and tell us exactly what problem are you facing. people here would certainly be able to help you.
pl give your background too, whether you are new to the civil services or what.
also mention your subjects and which aspect of g.s. is bothereing you.

last but not the least donot panic. g.s for both pre and mains acn be completed in 2-3 months so be realxed

    Hello sir,

Thank u very much for your kind response. As u have rightly mentioned i am much confused and nervous about my preparation. Your reply has comforted me and actually given me a boost of encouragement. Thank u sir for your kindness.

I am a graduate of Social Work. I have chosen Sociology and Psychology as my optional subjects. Though i have been aspiring for civil services from my childhood, I have just now started my full focused preparation. I am new to civil services and am planning to appear for the exam this year (2008). As far as I have assessed myself, I feel that i am very weak in General Studies which adds on to my nervousness.

Sir . . . , as you have asked, the specific area which botheres me much with regard to GS is Current Affairs and National History. Kindly guide me to direct my preparation in the right path.

now its fine. first step to success is DONOT PANIC.all of us who have earlier been selected have gone through this stage.
    i would suggest you something
    >study the mains syllabus first. the way to preparation is from mains to pt. why i suggest studying the mains syllabus is that the mains syllabus is well defined whereas the pt syllabus is not defined. that leads to confusion. then you need to study very less for pt especially.
    >study one subtopic and subject at a time only. do not try to study all the aspects at the same time.for example- if you are studying history, study history only and compete the syllabus. then only go ahead for another subject. take my words- no single subject of gs is going to take more than 10 days.
    >make your notes too at the time of studying.it will make your revision very easy and less time taking.
    >the whole of the gs syllabus if you study in this way will take 2-3 months and not more than that.
    >try to study the subjects that you are comfortable in first.

    any other problem/advice is solocited

    Sir,

Thank you so much for your immediate response. Now i am able to get a clear picture of where to start and how to go ahead. . .
As you have said, I compared the syllabus of GS Prelims, GS Mains Paper-I and GS Mains Paper-II and was able to understand that having GS Mains syllabus as an outline for preparation, one will be in a position to answer the Prelims Examination Questions.

Sir, i am planning to start with the unit : Current National Issues and topics of social relevance. Kindly guide me how i should prepare i.e., How i should analyse and comprehend the current events and issues, with an example.

you can start with the social issues but i would suggest that you should not "prepare" for the current issues right now, rather they should be studied just before the exam. till then just keep a watch on the current national and international events.

Thank You Sir! I will follow your advice. I will now stick on to the order of the units in the syllabus of GS Mains-paper I. I will start with Unit-I: "History of Modern India and Indian Culture" and try to complete the first reading within 10 days.

Kindly suggest me some tips if any for the same. . .

    Thank U Sir,

    With Regards,

    for g.s.
-do not read too many books. any one book is enough
-for history book by spectrum will do
-make short point wise notes while reading. you can always add on to the points if you get something else on that topic later.
-focus on time aspect too and stick to the time of 10 days that you have made.make 10 days routine redy before you start and stick to the daily schedule by dividing the topic in parts

    all the best
    Sanjeev
