Nominated 1 Time in 1 Post TOTW/F/M Award(s): 1 | I have gone through the mains marks of those who did not qualify for the personality test this time. The marks data for Mathematics Paper II is shocking. Marks Range(out of 300) --------- No. of Candidates 0(zero)------------------------------30(every 1 in 8 got zero) 1-10---------------------------------15 11-50--------------------------------70 51-100-------------------------------86 101+(max. =160)-------------------37 ------------- Total ------- --------------------- 238 Average score = 54.8/300 The average score of every other optional paper is more than double of this paper. Average of GS paper II is 102/300. The paper was not at all tough as the marks data shows. (Look at the marks of one of the candidate: Essay:150, GS:333(170+163), Chem:329(189+140), Maths:117(117+0), Total:929) About Moderation/normalisation/scaling: There is apparently heavy moderation of marks. I had a notion that moderation is done to make the averages equal. Is moderation all about the moderation of average marks or moderation of peak(highest) marks? In terms of raw marks in maths not more than 10% would have got less than 50 marks. But here this is the average marks with half of the candidates less than 50. Almost in all the other optionals hardly 15% get less than 100 marks, here only 15% got more than 100. I want to know the moderation criteria if any one knows. About the data: I got the marks data from RapidShare: Easy Filehosting The file is consistent with the marks of all the people i know. So i have every reason to believe these are correct marks

Nominated 0 Times in 0 Posts TOTW/F/M Award(s): 0 | This is a serious question raised on the sanity of taking math as an optional, even if you have an IQ for it. Sadly, i didnt see any reply to affirm/rebutt this hypothesis.... Waiting for an enlightened soul to shed some light here. I have to decide fast between Geo and Maths.

I have also seen the data, and analyzed myself. The average for paper 2 was 93. There are not so many zeros as well. I think you are not reading correctly from the Xcel file. I know this error you are making. Try to copy the data and try to use C/Matlab to come to the right conclusion.
