Banana republic
Small country (especially in Central America) that is politically unstable and whose economy is dominated by foreign companies and depends on one export (such as bananas)

Blue Laws
State or local laws prohibiting business on a given day, usually Sunday. Blue laws have been abolished in many places so that people may freely choose activities on any day of the week

Capital offence
A crime, such as murder or betrayal of one's country, that is treated so seriously that death may be considered an appropriate punishment


Dollar diplomacy
A policy aimed at furthering the interests of the United States abroad by encouraging the investment of U.S. capital in foreign countries.
A policy intended to safeguard a nation's foreign investments.

Domino theory
A theory that if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control.
A theory that one event will set off a train of similar events

Ethnic cleansing
The systematic elimination of an ethnic group or groups from a region or society, as by deportation, forced emigration, or genocide.

Eastern Bloc
The name applied to the former communist states of eastern Europe, including Yugoslavia and Albania, as well as the countries of the Warsaw Pact.

Farm bloc
A group of both Democratic and Republican members of Congress from the farming states of the Middle West that pressures the federal government to adopt policies favorable to farmers.

Global village
A phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan to describe the world that has been “shrunk” by modern advances in communications. McLuhan likened the vast network of communications systems to one extended central nervous system, ultimately linking everyone in the world.

Gunboat diplomacy
Diplomacy involving intimidation by threat or use of military force.
