North Korea, South Korea begin cross-border cargo train service
(source:The Times of India: Breaking news, views, reviews, cricket from across India.)

The first regular train service between South and North Korea for over 50 years crossed the heavily fortified border on Tuesday, Seoul's unification ministry said.

The freight train crossed at 8.30 am (2330 GMT Monday), said spokeswoman Yang Jeong-Hwa.

The daily service is the first tangible achievement of a historic inter-Korean summit in October, which agreed on a variety of sweeping reconciliation projects.

The last regular service was in 1951, during the 1950-53 Korean War. The train will carry raw materials and manufactured goods between South Korea and the North Korean border city of Kaesong, where a Seoul-funded industrial estate is sited.
