Simple majority...just half way mark of the total members present at the time of voting.

    Spl majority ...2/3rds required.

third one is spl majority in parl, and also to be ratified by atleast onehalf of state legislatures. Instances may be bills regarding distrbn of legistaive powers betwn Union and states, procedure for costitutional amendment , election of president etc.,

dear friend thanks for the reply,
for the second special i.e. 2/3 of the strength
    ex:
    1) if total strength of house is 100 then on that very day of voting it should be like 100* 2/3 = 66 members has to be there
    or
    2) the number of the member present on that day there 2/3 ex:
66 members were present on that day then:
    66*2/3 i.e 44 members.

I hope you have said for 2.

    many thanks

    No.
Special majority:- 2/3rd of present and voting and at leat 1/2 of total strength.
In your case, it should be at least 50.

Both of you adidas & epandit, ur analysis is not correct.

For a house to function( to take up any business ) the quorum of the house should be one tenth of the total strength of the house. let us take our LS into consideration. Total strength , i think is 545( pls check it up). Now 1/10th of 545 comes to 54.5 and is rounded to 55. So for Loksabha to function on any particular time, atleast 55 members should be present in the house. This is the first criteria.
Now coming to the voting suppose on a particular day there were only 55 members, this suffices to function the house. Now a ordinary bill has come to vote. In this case 55/2=28, ie., if 28 members vote for the bill, the bill is passed.

In case a bill is tabled which needs a spl majority and the members present is 55, then 55*2/3=37. So if 37 members vote for the bill, then the bill is passed. I hope now it is clear.

well I haven't checked out with books, but your case of special majority doesn't seem right.
Quorum concept is right, but that's limited to ordinary function of the parliament. For bills that require special majority, in addition to 2/3rd of the house present and voting , there is an additional requirement that the total votes in favour should not be less than the half the strength of the house. Correct me if i am wrong, please quote the reference as well.

    Special majority is
total Majority* of Each House and a majority of 2/3rd of the Members of Each house present & voting.

*total Majority = total number of members irrespective of the fact whether there are vacancies / absentees.

    Thanks Mrunal!

is there a difference between total majority and more than half of the total strength of the house?
    My take:
in case of gjakumar's example, for special majority:-

    Lets say 100 members
case 1: 66 present, so 51(absolute majority) needed.
case 2: 81 present and voting, so 54(2/3rd majority) needed.
