Default Good Books for preparation of Geography

Hello,
Please suggest me good geography books to be referred to while starting from the simplest level. Most of the books cover only a particular section so does that mean i wil have to study separate books for evry topic. I am totally confused as to from which corner i should start from.
Regards
Nidhi

hi nidhi,
you didnot tell whether you need help in geo for mains or for the pt exam. anyway considering that you ned some help in geo mains may i suggest you some books.
for the starters it is always advisable to start with the NCERT books for VIII- XII. that will always help.
now coming to your 2nd problem. the civil services exam is a competitive examination and hence you dont just have to score a particular percentage but you have to score over others to get through this exam. so you need to have indepth knowledge of your subject. however you donot need to study all the portions of all these books. you need to study as per the sylabus and as i told in my thread in geo forum that you need not study more than 50% of the syllabus. that way the syllabus of geo is too small.(pl visit the forum for hoe to prepare for geo mains).
the bottom line is dont panic.
wish you all the very best for your endeavours
sanjeev

Hello Sir,
Since ncert syllabus is frequently revised, so i've heard dat coaching institutes recommend ncert books of a particular year only. Some think dat d current issues of ncert books r much simpler dan d earlier editions. Plz tel ur opinion regarding dis. Also, u mentioned dat v need nt study whole of d syllabus, so how do i get to know vot to study n vot not? Does dat mean i hav 2 go 4 regular coaching, if yes den vich institute do u suggest? And apart from ncert books vot al books do v need to refer?

Hi Nidhi,
It is always better to go through the latest editions of any book including the NCERT. NCERT books are not the only books to be studied but they are the first and preparatory books to be read. after that you can graduate to other books too.

When i said that you need not study the whole syllabus what I meant that, you need not study the whole syllabus intensively. However it is always advisable to go through the whole topics at least once.

Regarding choosing the topics to be read it is always better to choose by your own aptitude and interest. I can give you some guidelines regarding this:
  • Go through the previous years questions.
  • Choose the topics from where questions are asked every year cg geomorphology, climatology etc.
  • The syllabus is divided into two sections every paper and questions have to be answered accordingly. So select particular topic from each section.

Sanjeev

Hi Nidhi,
Since you have taken up geography for ur prelims as well as mains, I would suggest u start with physical geography first ..then go on to human geography, world geography and Indian geog. in the same sequence. You can find ref. books on these topics on various sites, get the books 1 by 1 as per the topic u study..dont go n buy all together, that'll only add to confusion. If u dont find any list..dont worry, just go to the bookshop and ask for the books that are most bought by the aspirants for the particular topic(for eg.Savindra Singh or Majid Hussain for geomorphology..theyre usually the ones that are easier to understand). And yes, keep in mind, there is no 1 book that offers shortcut to the complete preparation and dont forget to buy previous yr's Q papers either. All the best.

The book for Geography u have to refer is : G.H.Leong.
This book u get it for both prelims & mains.
1st book is small & 2nd book is large / big.
but for prelims u have to buy small one , for mains big book by same author. this book is excellent & also is there in simple language.
