Flooding in Bangladesh - Low lying country in south Asia o >80% of country sits on low-lying floodplains along Brahmaputra and Ganges Rivers o 35% of country is <6m above sea level - Flooding occurs where Ganges Rivers and Brahmaputra converge into Bay of Bengal o Affected by monsoonal winds that blow over Bay of Bengal o 1991 – Violent cyclone at 250km/h created waves >6m high § 200,000 people died, livestock killed and 10 million homeless o 2004 – Annual monsoon coincided with flooding of 3 of its rivers § Created worst flood in 15 years o Submerged 2/3 of Bangladesh for 6 weeks o >800 deaths, 1.7 million homeless, damages of $2.2 billion Droughts in Sahel 1968-1973, 1982-1986 - Semi-arid area located along southern edge of Sahara Desert, Africa - Sudden decrease of rainfall in past decades - Reasons for drought o Over usage of well water, well dry up, land becomes drier o Improper agricultural practices – Soil become barren o Over rearing of cattle, continuous cultivation on land depleted its nutrients and vegetation o Plants and crops can no longer grow there - Impact o Many people die o Livestock dead o Widespread famine
