    UAA Dhirubhai Ambani award to Prof Robert H Grubs

    Nobel laureate Professor Robert H Grubbs was awarded the prestigious UAA Dhirubhai Ambani Lifetime Achievement Award by Reliance Industries Executive Director Nikhil R Meswani, at the University Institute of Chemical technology. Professor Grubbs is the Victor and Elizabeth Atkins professor of Chemistry at California Institute of Technology, USA.
    The award was instituted by the alumni association of the Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology, in association with Reliance Industries, in the memory of India's pioneering industrialist Dhirubhai Ambani, to recognise innovation and outstanding contribution to chemical science globally. The award comprises of a citation plus USD 20,000. It is the highest award given by an Indian entity till date.
    The honour has been bestowed upon Prof Grubbs, a Nobel laureate (Chemistry, 2005), for his innovative and outstanding contributions to science and engineering, having wide ramifications. His research in the area of design, synthesis and mechanistic studies of complexes, especially olefin metathesis reactions, have resulted into optimized and benign reaction conditions for the custom synthesis of valuable molecules in Biomedicines and polymers. His new catalysts, developed for metathesis, has already led to more efficient, less wasteful, simpler and environment friendly industrial and pharmaceutical synthesis methods.

    Kirti Chakra for Kabul embassy martyrs

    Ministry of defence proposes Kirti Chakra for Kabul embassy martyrs

    Ministry of defence has recommended Kirti Chakra, the second highest peace time gallantry award, for four victims of a suicide attack on the Indian embassy in Kabul on July 7.

    Brigadier R.D. Mehta, Indian Foreign Service Officer Mr. V.Venkateswara Rao, Indo Tibetan Border Police Personnel Mr. Roop Singh and Mr. Ajai Prathania are the names recommended for the top honour.

    Shri V. Venkateswara Rao would be the first IFS officer to be decorated with the honour of bravery. There have been instances when some civilians and Jammu and Kashmir Policemen have been honoured with the Chakra for exceptional courage. Foreign secretary Shiva Kumar Menon had described the deceased as “martyrs” whose contributions could not be ignored.

    Jampa Lahiri won the Franc Ocaner Prize

    Indian origin American Author Ms. Jampa Lahiri won the prestigious Franc Ocaner Prize for her writing “Un accustom Earth”. It is the highest prize for small stories. She will be awarded 27000 pounds (Rs.2.31 Lakhs). Her writing was unanimously elected for prize.

    Preity Zinta to receive Smita Patil Memorial Award

    Bollywood actor Preity Zinta will be conferred with the Smita Patil Memorial Award 2008 for her 'outstanding' contribution to the Hindi film industry.
    'Priety's name has been announced for the award,' sources close to the actor told IANS.

    'The award will be presented sometime in September,' the sources added.

    The biennial award is given by an NGO Priyadarshini Academy engaged in socio-cultural and educational activities.

    Priyadarshini Academy has been holding the biennial award function since its inception in 1984.

    In the past, distinguished celebrities like Yash chopra, Karishma Kapoor, Urmila Matondkar, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit have been bestowed with this ward. Kareena Kapoor was the recipient of the award in 2006.

    Yash Chopra receives France's top award

    Bollywood producer-director Yash Chopra was conferred the award of Officier de la Legion d'Honneur (Officer of the Legion of Honour) during a ceremony hosted by Jerome Bonnafont, Ambassador of France to India, on Saturday.

    Instituted by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, it is the highest distinction that can be conferred by the French Republic on a French citizen or a foreigner.

    Satyajit Ray, Ravi Shankar and Amitabh Bachchan are some of the famous Indian personalities who have been bestowed this honour in the past.

    "It is a memorable day in my life. I am overwhelmed by this honour. It is also an honour for our film industry," said the director of super hits such as Waqt , Deewar , Dil To Paagal Hai and Veer Zaara .

    Prakash Amte and his wife Mandakini are jointly selected for Ramon Magsaysay Award 2008 in the category Community Leadership for their philanthropic work with the Madia Gonds in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra and the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The couple is running a hospital and school in Hemal Kasa village in Vidharba for decades. They worked for the welfare of tribals “Madia and Gondu” in Hemal Kasa. He obtained a medical degree from GMC, Nagpur

    He started Lok Biradari Prakalp, a project for the development of tribal people in the forests of Gadchirolli district in 1973. The project seeks to improve health and educational services for tribals in this district.

    Prakash Amte is son of Baba Amte who was also received Magsaysay Award in 1985. Dr. Dighant and Dr. Aniketh are sons of Prakash Amte are also walking on the path of their parents.

    The other winners of the award are Grace Padaca – Philippines, Therdchai Jivacate – Thailand, Akio Ishii – Japan, Ahmad Syafii Maarif – Indonesia, Ananda Galappatti - Sri Lanka and one organization Center for Agriculture & Rural Development Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI) – Philippines.

    The award was instituted in the year 1957, to commemorate Ramon Magsaysay, the late president of the Philippines. So far 250 individuals or organizations are honored with Ramon Magsaysay Award.

    The winners will be presented in a function at Manila in Philippines on 31of August, 2008.
