You definitely not need to read all of IGNOU. Parts of MA notes are good for paper 2, as you will see in the attached file.
This is a discussion on urgent-regarding sociology notes.... within the Sociology forums, part of the Subjects category; for sociolology mains do we need to study full BA notes there are many units and parts and sub parts also tell me is there any need to refer to MA IGNOU notes for sociology mains...

dont you think this is too much? referring to so many sources for different sections? I'm refering to these coaching classes' notes (due to dispersed nature of content) but i find them very haphazard and unorganized which doesnt allow a good understanding of the topics (I've read 2 of them). In case i do get through the UPSC Preliminary Examination, I'll be in a spot...can someone recommend a good, coherent book/content for mains?
Also, I've read Haralambos (&Heald), which I found to be a wonderful book (very structured and coherent) but this pdf says you have to refer to Haralambos and Holborn? Is there much difference? Some people told me that since Heald is a dated book, it's not relevant anymore? In that case, all my work would go waste man...someone please guide me, it's getting dark, i cant see anymore (just kidding)
SOS!!

The first 3 topics which are referred from Holborn are research methodology related topics, which are not covered well in this book. For the rest of the topics (Stratification, Work and economic life, Politics, Religion, Partly Family, Marriage, Kinship, but except social change) Heald is good, in fact quite good.
To my knowledge, there is not any one book which covers all topics for mains.

how about IGNOU notes? i went through a couple of units, and found them quite lucid...whether or not they would suffice is what i'm asking

They are good source; but are not exhaustive to the syllabus.

will CN Shankar Rao suffice preperation of paper 2 along with upendra sir notes.??
if not plz suggest any other relevant source??

"will CN Shankar Rao suffice preperation of paper 2 along with upendra sir notes.??"
manish: i went through upendra's paper II notes (initial few topics) and the detailed table of contents of CN Shankar Rao's book on google books...it appears that upendra's notes have been prepared using this book? Please correct me if i'm wrong.
anyway, how is this book? i keep learning about new books everday![]()

@john rambo
hello,do u have socio as ur optional??
i havnt gone thru paper 2 i.e indian society by C.N.Shankar Rao.
if ur aquaint with any other book then kindly notify me.
thanx

yes, i have socio optional
I havent much idea what is to be studied for paper II (or even paper I for that matter). It's my first attempt-I dont even know if I'll clear UPSC Preliminary Examination, but I'm studying nevertheless. I actively seek others' guidance, even as I build up my own experiences through mistakes.
As of now, I've read Haralambos and Heald, and Saroj Sammal's notes but I dont feel confident at all. Any other suggestions for good books/notes?

Hi,
Even I have 'Haralambos & Heald'. You should not panic. The other book 'Haralambos & Holborn' is quite huge. I feel if you've gone thru Heald do not buy Holborn.
2004 Rank 1 had recommended "Sociology by Anthony Giddens" for concepts. He too didn't feel confident. But after Giddens, he cud grasp things in a better way. Also it's updated.
I found Giddens quite helpful for a layman like me. But, let me warn you it's thick & costs around 900 bucks.
"TIME MANAGEMENT" is really a misnomer - the challenge is not to manage time, but to manage ourselves.

costly is tolerable, but thick is not
on a serious note, how do you find giddens vis-a-vis haralambos/heald? i understand that heald is a 1980 published book and hence could be dated. If one has read heald and understood it reasonably well, is giddens still needed?

@ johnrambo
Plz go thru the chapterwise summaries of 'Giddens 5th Ed." at Anthony Giddens | Sociology 5th Edition | Student Resources | Summaries . Then you'll be in a better position to judge. All the best.
